General Fire Safety Training

About the course

This face-to-face non-accredited training has been developed specifically for Aged Care staff who may be required to assist in the initial response to a fire emergency including investigation of a possible Code Red (Fire/Smoke) or participating in an evacuation (Code Orange).

This training relates to the Australian Standard AS3745:2010 Planning for emergencies in facilities which stipulates that all occupants working at a facility shall receive training to enable them to act in accordance with the emergency response procedures. Additionally, Australian Standard AS4083:2010 Planning for emergencies in health facilities provides for staged evacuation in residential aged care.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn the following:

  • Staff responsibilities as identified in the organisation's emergency response procedures
  • The performance of the building and its installations during a fire or other emergency and may include features such as fire doors, emergency lights, exit signage, sprinklers, ventilation and smoke control systems and fire rated stairs
  • Procedures for the specific emergencies such as fire or internal emergencies such as a gas leak or chemical spill
  • Responding to alarms and reports of emergencies
  • The types of emergencies contained in the organisation's emergency response procedures
  • How to report emergencies including activation of alarm systems if installed
  • Recognising and reporting unsafe conditions and correcting unsafe conditions when appropriate
  • Authority, roles responsibilities and identification of Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) members
  • Reacting safely to emergencies and alarms
  • Safe approach and evacuation procedures with an emphasis on staged evacuation
  • The location of internal and external staging and assembly areas as contained in the emergency plan
  • The location of egress routes
  • Occupants and visitors with disabilities including personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs)
  • The use of installed emergency response equipment and may include evacuation chairs, evacuation sheets and evacuation mats.

Trial Evacuation Drill

Training incorporates a practical trial evacuation exercise (great if the client has a vacant resident's room for the simulation) where staff put into practice the following:

  • Safe room approach
  • Checking the door for signs of heat
  • Safe room entry procedure
  • How to undertake a rapid but efficient room search 
  • Actions to take if staff encounter smoke
  • Stage 1, 2 & 3 evacuation procedure
  • Residents who may refuse to evacuate - actions to take  
  • Use of rescue equipment such as rescue slide mat (if applicable to the facility)

Please note that this evacuation drill does not involve participation of residents.  

Delivery Schedule

We offer flexibility to our clients. The following options are available to choose from:

  • Morning:     9:30am - 11:00am or 10:00am - 11:30am 
  • Afternoon: 1:30pm - 3:00pm or 2:00pm - 3:30pm
